Victoria Spivey Album: Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1926-1927)

Song: Christmas Morning Blues
Victoria Spivey was one of the first big blues stars and one of the few female blues songwriters of her time. "Christmas Morning Blues" is one of the earliest blues recordings to feature a "Christmas sucks" theme, and Spivey doesn't hold back. It's dire: "New Year's he won't be here, 'cause death will be his Santy Claus." And that's just the second verse. The great guitar accompaniment is provided by Lonnie Johnson, Spivey's longtime friend and frequent collaborator.[by Nick Morrison-npr.org]

Un 45 tours ‘vynil’ 2 titres (My Baby Rocks ! / My Honey Bop) est sorti fin 2009. Il a était enregistré sous le nom de JAKE CALYPSO & His Red Hot (Chickens Records). Ce dernier ayant tellement rencontré de succès auprès des DJ et aficionados des sonorités et du style ‘fifties’, que le groupe a toute de suite enchaîné avec l’album intitulé ‘GRANDADDY GREASE’ sorti en CD et 33 tours automne 2010. Il s’agit de 12 compositions de JAKE CALYPSO dans la pure veine ‘Country & Rockabilly’ influencées par Al Ferrier, Alvis Wayne, Hank Williams ou Elvis de 1954 à 55. Début 2011, un nouveau titre : ‘The Devil & Me’ des HOT CHICKENS se trouvera sur la compilation ‘ROCKERS KULTURE VOL.2’, (JAKE CALYPSO était déjà présent sur le 1er volume). A Tribute to Willie Dixon performed by Eric Mingus, Queen Esther, Henry Kaiser, Glenn Phillips, Melvin Gibbs, Lance Carter, and Elliott Sharp

ELECTRIC WILLIE:
I first came to the blues through the Yardbirds and Rolling Stones, typical for a middle-class white kid in the suburbs in the mid-1960's. A recurring name in the songwriting credits was Willie Dixon. As my blues listening deepened into the real stuff, I soon realized that Willie Dixon was the man who distilled in words and music so much of the essence of the black American experience: it's myths, histories, rituals, joys, sorrow, pain, and hopes. These songs and their embedded memes spread throughout American music. In so many ways, Willie Dixon provided the link between blues and rock. Playing in bands from the 60's onward, it was always natural to include a Willie Dixon tune whether for its lyrics, both sly and wise, or its infectious grooves and harmonies. These songs have stayed with us and one hopes, will always be with us.

Scott Beal was the late and lamented founder of Gaff Records - a friend and wisecracking companion who is sorely missed. It was Scott's idea to get Henry Kaiser, Glenn Philips, and I together for a project. In my discussions with Henry, the Electric Willie concept was born - a sonic tribute to the master and also a tribute to the Electric Mud and Electric Wolf records dissed by critics yet strangely loved by many musicians who dug the psychedelic excess and especially the wicked licks of guitar master Pete Cosey. Obvious choices to join us were the slamming rhythm section of bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer Lance Carter (another friend late, lamented and sorely missed!) and singers Eric Mingus and Queen Esther.

While always enjoying jamming the classics, we also hoped to bring to the table some of Willie Dixon's lesser known works including his collaborations with Ry Cooder and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir. Throughout his life, Dixon was man of great conscience and pacifism who often commented on social and political issues. Festival de Blues sur la Place aux arcades

Concerts en terrasse (sous les arcades en cas de pluie)
Samedi 16 Juillet 2011 à Sauveterre de Rouergue, se tiendra le SauveTerre de Blues,
organisé par lassociation AJAL, avec le soutien du FSE et de lUnion Européenne.
Pour pimenter cette journée, lassociation propose plusieurs animations, autour du pôle des
métiers dArt de Sauveterre, lentrée est libre : à partir de 15h, conte en musique pour les petits et
les grands, sessions de blues acoustique aux ateliers, visite du village et du pôle artisanal. Une
démonstration et des expositions des artisans de lassociation Arts et Savoir-faire aura également lieu sur la place aux arcades
.
A partir de 20h30, place à la musique !Mystère Trio et son swing manouche débutera cette
soirée, puis il fera place aux véritables OVNI de Mountain Men, qui démontreront que le Blues n' estpas une musique passéiste. 
Pour terminer, J.Merrick viendra délivrer un mélange de rock et de folk
énergique et plein de finesse.

75 gr geraspte kaas

2 dl melk

2 eieren

Muffinvormen invetten, oven voorverwarmen op 180° Zeef bloem, kerrie,peper, zout, eventueel bakpoeder in een kom , voeg paprika, olijven en kaas toe. 

Boter, lichtgeklopte eieren, melk mengen en in kuiltje gieten van de bloem, snel door elkaar mengen en in de muffinvormpje gieten.

20 min bakken op 160°, even laten staan en dan lossen

The Merle Haggard Story

A tale of triumph over adversity with elements of Shakespere and soap opera. Born in 1937, to parents who had recently moved to California from the Oklahoma dust bowl and brought up in a converted railroad boxcar. His father, who’d been a fiddler, died when Merle was only nine, which contributed to his getting into trouble as a youngster. He’d also taken an early interest in music and began performing around Bakerfield California while still in his teens – but didn’t really take it seriously until after his release from San Quentin prison in 1960.

Working as a ditch digger and other odd jobs around Bakersfield during the day and singing in bars at night, Merle caught the attention of steel guitar player Fuzzy Owen and Lewis Talley who were setting up Tally Records – the founding home of what became “The Bakersfield Sound”. In the 1960s, Nashville had adopted a formulaic approach to country music that featured string backgrounds and complex production. A number of artists wanted to take the genre back to its honky-tonk roots and simple arangements – one strain of this movement featured Fender telecasters and other rock influences with a base in Bakersfield California at Tally Records studio. Merle Haggard and Buck Owens were the early stars of this scene.

In 1961, Merle hooked up with Buck Owens’ ex-wife Bonnie, who was 8 years older and had been the off and on girlfriend of Fuzzy Owen – spliting from his first wife. They married in 1965, right after Merle signed with Capitol Records. The marriage lasted about ten years. Along the way Merle had a long string of major hits that made the Country, Pop and Rock charts – securing a place as one of the most successful country musicians of all time.
Bonnie continued as a back-up singer in Merle’s band The Strangers until she was replaced by Merle’s third wife, Leona Williams, in 1975. Merle and Leona divorced in 1983. He married a fourth time and has six children.
Over the years, Merle rose to the top of country music’s more traditional (redneck) segment. His only competition came from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson with the “Outlaw” side. It was a shock to many when Merle and Willie released Pancho and Lefty in 1982 – thus joining the competing strains. Although his performance schedule has slowed considerably, he continues as one of the true legends of Country Music.

THE OUTLAW COUNTRY ERA

In the late 60s "mainstream" country music had settled into two set formulas - one had full orchesteral backing (violins and all) and the other was pure "get drunk/cry in your beer" honky tonk. Several artists and composers were frustrated and wanted to go in a different (younger) direction. This became the "Outlaw" movement. The term outlaw referred to their not wanting to go along with the way Nashville was doing things. Waylon Jennings really set in motion when he demanded and got full control of all aspects of his record production. Soon, whole new studios, and labels were born.

In addition to Waylon and Willie Nelson (the most visible "Outlaws") were Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, David Allan Coe, Tompall Glazer, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, Leon Russell, and Hank Williams, Jr. Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (The Flatlanders) were doing their own thing in Austin, Texas and several of the others joined them there.

Waylon should have been on the plane that Buddy Holly was on when it crashed, but missed the flight. J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), a Lubock, Texas disc jockey who'd written White Lightning and had just recorded Chantilly Lace took the seat Waylon missed. The rest is history - "The Day The Music Died". Ritchie Valens, who had been on tour with Buddy Holly was also killed in the crash.
